Kids Turn to OnStar for News on Santa’s Journey

Latest status just a Blue Button push away for area families

Starting on Christmas Eve, Corry, Warren, Erie, and Jamestown-area families traveling in General Motors’ vehicles with OnStar services will be able to learn Santa’s whereabouts by simply pressing the blue OnStar button in the U.S., Canada and now in Mexico.

For the fifth consecutive year, OnStar is providing the service through collaboration with the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, “Track Santa” program.

From 7 a.m. on December 24 until 5 a.m. on December 25, anyone with an active OnStar subscription can request a “Santa Update,” which an OnStar advisor will provide based on NORAD information.

“The ‘Santa Seeker’ really helps spread holiday cheer,” said Robert Crotty of Crotty Chevrolet Buick. “The OnStar advisors put on their Santa hats and elf ears and wholeheartedly take advantage of the opportunity to spread such joy to the children in Corry, Warren, Erie, and Jamestown and more.”

So how does OnStar keep up with the high volume of inquiries from these curious little callers?

While their first priority is the safety and security of their subscribers, they make adjustments in staff so that they are able to respond to the Santa calls as well as their day-to-day calls for assistance.

“For nearly 60 years, NORAD has employed the same military technology used every day for Homeland Defense mission to also track Santa during his Yuletide journey,” said Stacey Knott, NORAD Tracks Santa program manager. “We use our military satellites, radars, fighter jets and Santa Cams to tell the world Santa’s location every Christmas Eve.”

Chevrolet’s and Buick’s Unlocks RemoteLink for Microsoft Windows Phones

Becomes only OEM to offer remote services across all four smartphone platforms for Corry residents

When the OnStar RemoteLink Mobile App launched, it was the first app from an automaker to offer Corry, Erie, Warren and Jamestown, NY-area drivers remote access to their vehicle. Now RemoteLink can claim the distinction of being the first remote telemetry app from an automaker to work on all four primary smartphone platforms – iPhone, Android, Blackberry and now Microsoft Windows phones.

OnStar has expanded the availability of RemoteLink so that GM drivers with select Microsoft Windows phones can start experiencing remote vehicle connectivity. The app is available on both Windows Phone 7 and 8 operating systems, and will be accessible in the Windows Phone Store on mobile devices. 

“The RemoteLink app has been available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry smartphones for a while now,” said Robert Crotty, VP of Crotty Chevrolet Buick. “But OnStar heard from many subscribers asking for a Windows app.” 

Today, the RemoteLink Mobile App, which is available for nearly all of Crotty Chevrolet Buick’s GM models, has been downloaded more than 1.7 million times. The most common use of the app is checking vehicle data such as oil life, tire pressure and fuel level. These requests get made nearly 600,000 times every month.

RemoteLink for Windows, like the Blackberry version, was written using HTML5 technology. HTML5 is a language for structuring and writing content for the web that is gaining momentum in the mobile app space. 

The app will be available for Corry, Erie, Warren and Jamestown, NY-area OnStar subscribers and will support four language options, including English and Spanish. 

This expansion comes on the heels of the announcement that RemoteLink’s key-fob based features – remote start, lock, unlock and horn and lights activation – would be standard for five years on all new GM vehicles. This launch means that Corry, Erie, Warrne and Jamestown, NY-area GM drivers with select Windows phones will be able to access RemoteLink key-fob features as well. The five years of standard remote key-fob services does not include access to additional OnStar services.

RemoteLink connects to a driver’s vehicle in a secure fashion, requiring a username and password to log in and a four digit PIN to make a remote vehicle command.

OnStar subscribers can download the application and visit onstar.com to enable remote commands.

Where’s Santa? OnStar Follows His Trip from the North Pole

OnStar and Crotty Chevrolet Buick will help preserve the magic of this holiday season by enabling children everywhere to learn Santa’s whereabouts on Christmas Eve with a simple press of the OnStar button, thanks to its collaboration with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) “Track Santa” program.

Chevrolet Donates 50 Trucks to Red Cross for Storm Relief

Brand sends full-size pickups and vans to sites hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy

DETROIT – Chevrolet today donated 50 Silverado full-size pickup trucks and Express cargo vans to the American Red Cross for use in relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy and other storms buffeting the Eastern seaboard and nearby states.

“It is during disasters like this that we all need to pull together as a country and Chevrolet has a role in that,” said General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “Making these vehicles available quickly where they can do the most good is something we can do right now.”

GM’s OnStar subsidiary is also supporting the initiative by providing each of the donated vehicles with 300 OnStar Hands-Free Calling minutes of hands-free cellular and three months of its Directions and Connections plan which includes turn-by-turn navigation services. service available via Advisor or by download. The trucks are being pulled from existing inventory at dealerships closest to where they are needed.

In addition to the vehicle donation, the GM Foundation earlier donated $250,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program, which enables the agency to be ready to provide immediate disaster relief anywhere in the country.  The money is used to shelter, feed and meet emotional needs of disaster victims. The money also helps feed emergency workers, handle inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provide blood and blood products and help disaster victims access other available resources.

First responders at a crash scene can be the difference between life and death for a critically injured person, but the time it takes to arrive can delay medical care. OnStar’s specially trained Emergency Advisors can help bridge that gap with a service called First Assist.

OnStar will soon offer Northwestern, PA customers Family Link, a new service that will allow subscribers to stay connected to their loved ones when driving an OnStar-equipped vehicle.

Family Link is an optional service that includes two key features:

• Vehicle Locate: Subscribers can log onto the Family Link website to view a map with the vehicle’s location at any time.

• Vehicle Location Alert: Subscribers can set up email or text message notifications to let them know the location of their vehicle. They can choose the day, time and frequency of the alerts.
