Mini Car Myths Debunked

2013 Chevrolet Spark challenges common myths

 2013 Chevrolet Spark

Mini cars have been populating international streets for decades, and are now building a solid presence in the United States. The segment is characterized by some misconceptions that the newest entries, like Chevrolet’s all-new Spark, can confidently refute.

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark, a four-passenger, five-door hatchback, was designed to challenge what’s possible in the mini-car segment. “The all-new Chevrolet Spark will offer our customers both practicality and fun,” said Robert Crotty, VP of Crotty Chevrolet Buick in Corry, PA. “The great design and latest connectivity features are sure to make the Spark a fast favorite among Corry, Warren, Erie and Jamestown, NY area drivers looking for a small economical and affordable car.”

Here’s a look at how Chevy’s newest addition to its small car line-up is tackling some of the common misconceptions surrounding today’s mini-cars.

Myth: Mini cars aren’t Safe

Reality: Spark features the same advanced safety technologies available on the rest of the Chevrolet passenger car lineup

The Spark protects both driver and passengers with 10 standard air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags that extend over the front and rear seating rows. A strong body frame made of high strength steel makes up more than 62 percent of the Spark’s underbody and 42 percent of its upper body.

2014 Impala Engine Gets a High-Tech Lift

New computer-controlled valvetrain technology improves fuel efficiency

2014 Chevrolet Impala Intake Valve Lift Control

Drivers of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala coming early next year to Crotty Chevrolet Buick in Corry, PA. can get improved fuel economy over the competition due in part to a new advanced valvetrain technology on the Ecotec 2.5L four-cylinder engine.

Chevrolet’s redesigned flagship sedan uses new Intake Valve Lift Control (IVLC) technology that enables variable intake valve lift, duration and timing over a wide range of engine operation. When the technology operates in low-lift mode, the engine pumps only the air it needs to meet the driver’s demand. The system switches to high-lift mode at higher speeds or under heavy loads, providing the full output capability of the engine.

“Intake Valve Lift Control works so seamlessly drivers aren’t likely to notice it at all,” said Mike Anderson, GM global chief engineer for Ecotec engines. “What they will notice is a fuel savings of up to one mile per gallon.”

2013 Chevy Traverse Gives Families New Gathering Space

2013 Chevrolet Traverse Crossover

  • New athletic exterior debuts Chevrolet crossover utility face
  • More refined interior with class-leading space for cargo and eight passengers
  • New and industry-exclusive safety features
  • Improved car-like ride and handling

The new 2013 Chevrolet Traverse crossover-utility vehicle offers families a new gathering space with greater style, refinement and safety. It goes into production this fall, building on the space, comfort and efficiency that have made Traverse popular.

“The new Traverse is a family vehicle without compromise,” said John Crotty, Owner of Crotty Chevrolet in Corry, PA. “It is more capable than many sport-utility vehicles, with as much room as a minivan and better functionality than both. The Traverse is clever, capable and confident – and there when you need it most.”

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has a new athletic exterior design, complemented by a more expressive front end that introduces a new face for Chevrolet crossover utilities.

The front features a new shape, supported by a powerdome hood, a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design, new lamps, chrome accents around the grille and fog lamps, and sculpted front corners similar to the Malibu sedan. The new design captures the overall character of Chevy’s new car lineup, for a consistent family resemblance.

“We have injected a stronger presence into the Traverse exterior by focusing on the details,” said Phillip Zak, GM director of exterior design. “The small but important changes give it a more vibrant personality, which more closely reflects the lifestyles of the families that rely on the Traverse to get them through their busy lives.”

At the rear, redesigned lamps and the license plate pocket are positioned in the new liftgate for a sportier look.

Chevrolet Cruze going through high-tech weather testing simulator

How many gallons of water could your car withstand? How about 6,600 gallons? At Chevrolet, engineers channel Mother Nature to help ensure the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze can withstand the elements – from heat to hurricanes – through high-tech weather testing simulators.

The Cruze is tested for a range of summer weather and road conditions, including the exclusive Universal Water Test Booth at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground. Designed to keep the car water tight, the test subjects the Cruze to a lifetime of water exposure – 6,600 gallons – in just eight minutes. Using 330 nozzles, 825 gallons of water are sprayed onto the car each minute. The intensity of the test exposes weaknesses in the car’s seals, which experts can resolve to help ensure drivers and passengers stay dry in a rainstorm.

2013 Chevrolet Volt Boosts EV Range to 38 Miles

Battery storage capacity increase and cell chemistry changes enable improved range

The all-electric vehicle range of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt will be 38 miles on a single charge, providing Corry, Warren, Erie and Northwestern PA drivers with a three-mile EV range increase from the 2012 model. The miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) will increase from 94 miles to 98 miles and the total range, including extended range operation, will be 380 miles.

Based on real-world experience by Volt owners since the vehicle launched in late 2010, engineers made minor changes to the material composition of the battery cell chemistry, resulting in improved performance and durability. Manganese spinel chemistry remains the foundation for the Volt’s battery system, but the amount of each material has been slightly modified to provide better life performance.

Give Mom a Vehicle Makeover for Mother’s Day

Survey says cleaning her car would be a fine gift for one in three Moms

Mothers Day Car Wash

Corry area mothers spend a great deal of time in the car, shuttling children, running errands and commuting. Nine out of 10 Moms drive… somewhere.

A national online survey conducted by Harris Interactive® for General Motors found that one in three Moms with mess makers, er, kids under 18, would like their car washed and cleaned as a Mother’s Day gift.

More than one in five (21 percent) would like a family road trip for Mother’s Day. The survey didn’t indicate whether Mom wanted to do the driving.

If neither of those survey responses resonates, Crotty Chevrolet Buick offers these budget-friendly ideas for your mother’s car on Mother’s Day

• Give her some gas. Just one in 10 Moms mentioned this in the survey, but a fill-up could be a nice surprise anyway – one less thing for her to do.

• A little fresh air. After the car wash and vacuuming, spend an extra $3 or so for an air freshener. But choose wisely on the scent.

• Some peace of mind. Another gift for Mom’s vehicle is OnStar FMV, the aftermarket replacement mirror packed with OnStar’s core safety, security and connectivity services like Turn-by-Turn directions. The hardware and installation is now just $99.99 (through June 16) and subscription plans cost $199 per year for the base package or $299 per year for the premium package. FMV is compatible with more than 100 million vehicles on the road.

And don’t forget a card. Leave it on the front seat of her car. And if it’s not a singing card, you can surprise Mom by downloading some of her favorite music or making a custom CD to help her enjoy the drive.
